Four films built on technique — ARGO and Mandarin Oriental, HK Electric’s whole operation in one continuous move, and Swire Properties’ city shot from the water. Between them, the creative lab where those techniques were invented: five Vimeo Staff Picks and seven festival awards.

ARGO — six ingredients, six techniques.

ARGO is the bar at the Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong, built on rule-breakers, spirits nobody has seen before, and technology in the process. Four Seasons commissioned a brand film and then a series of shorts on the bar’s key ingredients — and asked that the innovation show in the filmmaking itself, not just in the subject.

01 In camera Multiple red-dressed figures, stripe effects and the camera passing straight through mirrors. The centre-stage bar and its sweeping architectural curves, with terrariums and mirrors bringing the outdoors into the room.
02 One ingredient, one solution The six ingredient shorts each got their own answer rather than one look applied six times: vanilla built with sourced props because it photographs badly, honey poured into the bar’s own cup and stretched in post, coffee and cacao taken to extreme close-up on super macro and mirrored into pattern, the apple filmed turning on its axis and composited, rice given the coffee treatment with slow motion added.
03 The finish Dynamic editing and fast cuts, over a sound mix built for the room rather than laid on top of it.

Mandarin Oriental — two rooms, one film, side by side.

Two parallel stories between the two renewed spaces of the Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong — Man Wah and The Aubrey. The same beats in both: the interior, people using the room, the chefs at work, the signature dishes. On screen they run at the same time, for the length of the film.

01 Matched by design Both venues were filmed at similar angles, and the talents and staff were directed to move in the same directions and at the same pace in each — the split screen was held in mind from the first setup, not found in the edit.
02 The storyboard is the control A detailed storyboard came before everything. More than on an ordinary film it was essential: full control of space, character and camera angle is the only way two rooms line up frame for frame.
03 Told apart on purpose The two halves had to be identifiable at a glance, so the aesthetics were deliberately different: architecture first, then the people — three friends at Man Wah, a couple at The Aubrey. In the kitchens, where rooms and uniforms are alike, the dishes and the cooking style carry the distinction.
04 Chefs, choreographed Kitchens the public never sees, with space measured on a site visit before the shoot. Each scene was composed with ingredients, tools, plates and bowls for texture and colour, and every movement was coordinated with the chefs against what the other venue was doing at that second.

A split screen is easy to shoot once and very hard to sustain — every pair of shots has to rhyme in movement, light and cut. The film.

Where the techniques come from.

HK Electric — every facility, in one continuous move.

HK Electric is one of Hong Kong’s main power utilities, supplying electricity to millions of customers. The film takes a viewer through all of its facilities — power lines, substations, the main plant — in a single travelling shot lasting thirty seconds, and never cuts away.

01 The move — hyper-lapse Series of time-lapse frames stitched into one seamless, fast-motion travelling shot. It opens on a consumer tapping an iPad, passes the power lines and substations in the distance, and carries straight into the main facility — without ever leaving the move.
02 The sound Hyper-lapse footage floats unless the audio holds it down. The mix was built from the hum of electricity, machinery and the rooms themselves — which is what makes thirty seconds of impossible speed still feel like a place.
03 The colour The red and white light running through the film is HK Electric’s own brand palette, lit and graded in deliberately rather than added over the top.
04 The cast HK Electric’s own employees appear in the film as extras, and worked with the crew to identify which parts of the operation were worth the camera. Access of that kind is not something a production can buy.

Swire Properties — the city at scale, from the water.

A corporate film for Swire Properties, filmed across three countries — Hong Kong, several cities in mainland China, and Miami. Its signature is city-scale timelapse: vantage points found out on the water, and a long hyperlapse running the length of Hong Kong harbour.

01 Timelapse from the water Vantage points were scouted long before a frame was shot, because from the water the whole skyline reads at once. Cameras often started at 4am and ran to the end of the day, holding out for the colours and the moments worth keeping.
02 The harbour hyperlapse The most iconic sequence in the film, and the most expensive kind of second there is: a few of them on screen take days in post — stabilisation, object removal and advanced grading — on top of the design and the shoot.
03 Advanced object removal Every location was prepared with the client in advance, and things still walked into frame. Taking them out cleanly, with no sign of the repair, is its own workload — and it is what lets a working building look composed.
04 One look across three countries Different spaces, different light. The film had to hold a single lighting and colour identity from Hong Kong to a lantern-lit night garden in Chengdu to Miami, so the viewer never notices the continent changing.
